In the build up to our first CukeUp! in Australia we'll be running a series of Q&A sessions with our speakers. First up our keynote, Anne-Marie Charrett. Anne-Marie is an experienced tester and currently works at Tyro Payments in Sydney. We caught up to discuss her views on Behaviour-Driven Development and what folks can expect from her first CukeUp! appearance.
You are a self confessed Context Driven Tester. How does that fit in with working in a BDD world/environment and are there any challenges?
BDD is a method of development (not testing) whose output happens to supply automated checks. So it's a bit like trying to compare apples and oranges. The problem comes when the assumption that BDD is a testing approach and it's used to attempt to solve testing challenges. Testing can be supplemented by BDD but its not a replacement to it.
A Context Driven Tester is one that understands nuance. We're naturally allergic to words like "best practice". The folks who created & developed BDD know it's more a philosophy than a best practice and that it's not suitable for all circumstances.. Unfortunately many who decide to use BDD to "automate testing" don't have that level of understanding.
At CukeUp! AU your keynote talk is titled "When your testing is in a pickle". What do you want attendees to take away from your session?
Prescott’s Pickle Principle dictates: "Cucumbers get more pickled than brine gets cucumbered." (Jerry Weinberg), meaning when we introduce a foreign object into an environment, the foreign object tends to be more impacted than the culture it lives in. We often look to automation (our cucumber) to solve our testing problem, but we forget the environment (the brine) in which automation lives.
What does your brine look like? Is automation a silver bullet solution to a deeper problem that exists? Exactly what problem are you attempting to solve? Better quality? Faster throughput? Without some strategic thinking your "cucumber" may end up bloated with your brine remaining much the same. Is that what you want? This keynote looks at what it takes to develop a testing strategy that allows automation to support your testing strategy as opposed to defining it.

You recently wrote a piece "Nice girls don't get the keynote" in which you urge your readers to be more open to ask for keynotes. Where do you think responsibility lies regarding a lack of diversity at conferences generally?
Hey! I'm a context driven tester remember? There's not silver bullet answer here, of course responsibility lies with all of us. That means, testers have to be courageous enough to put themselves forward, Mentors need to help grow talent and conferences need to support initiatives like Speak Easy. We've been blessed with great voluntary support so far and the conferences have really embraced this concept. What's missing though is a lack of organisational sponsorship to help fund our initiative. If we could hire someone to support our work that would really contribute to the success of this initiative.
Testers play a fundamental role in BDD. What are the attributes of a great tester?
The easy question hey?! :)
A tester needs to be part philosopher (to understand what), part psychologist (to understand why), part developer (to understand how), part scientist (to understand how we know), part anthropologist (who matters). Personally, I can't go past someone who understands nuance, has a bellyful of courage and a thirst for learning and improvement, but I suspect these traits are desirable in many other professions too!

What common pitfalls do you see when teams attempt to deliver software applying BDD?
People often attempt BDD in the belief that its a test automation process. It's not, its a collaborative based approach to development that places an emphasis on communication between key stakeholder to deliver the most optimal output. Without that mindset, it's an uphill struggle to implement. For example, I've seen testers trying to posthumously implement hooks into code because the developer hasn't. Seriously where is the collaboration in that?
You're a lecturer, consultant, engineering lead, and founder of Speak Easy. How do you split your days?
Hermione lent me her "time turner" allowing me to increase the number of hours in the day. Seriously, what can I say? I'm a compulsive humanitarian.
